Bucolic bliss wins over urban angst
The Guardian 1998-07-01

City or town dwellers are 50% more likely to suffer anxiety or depression than people in the country, according to research suggesting one Briton in six has a neurotic disorder.

The findings come from a summary of surveys carried out for the Department of Health to provide the first official data on the extent of mental illness. Levels of neurosis were found to be half as high again in urban areas as in the countryside and levels of psychosis - mainly schizophrenia and manic depressive disorder - were twice as high.

One in 20 people had experienced symptoms of alcohol dependency during the year before they were surveyed, says the summary in Psychiatric Bulletin, the journal of the Royal College of Psychiatrists.
